Foundational Pillars Training
October 2026
Week 2 — Serving with Excellence

Core Scriptures: Colossians 3:23-24; 1 Peter 4:10-11; Daniel 6:3-4; Ecclesiastes 9:10.
Teaching Focus
God is not only concerned about what we do; He is concerned about how we do it. As CrossCamp moves from establishment toward commissioning, the pillars must understand that service is worship expressed through responsibility.
We have already learned that we must be established in Christ, planted in the house, building in unity, becoming trustworthy and becoming fruitful. Now we must develop the ability to serve what God is building with excellence.
Excellence does not mean perfection. It means giving God our best with the resources, abilities and opportunities He has entrusted to us. A person may have a genuine heart but still need to develop better discipline. A person may be gifted but careless. A person may be willing but unreliable.
Expository Teaching — Colossians 3:23-24
Paul says, "Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men." Notice the breadth of the instruction: "whatever you do." Paul does not limit excellence to preaching or worship. It applies to every legitimate responsibility.
Therefore setting up chairs can be ministry, welcoming someone can be ministry, organizing documents can be ministry, managing media can be ministry, cleaning the facility can be ministry, following up a new believer can be ministry, and preparing a meeting can be ministry. The significance of an assignment is not determined only by its visibility. God sees the heart behind the service.
Serving God, Not People
Paul says, "as to the Lord and not to men." This corrects a common problem in ministry. If we serve primarily for people, our motivation becomes dependent on recognition. When people applaud us we are encouraged; when nobody notices we become discouraged. But when Christ is the reason we serve, our motivation becomes stable.
Excellence Is Not Perfectionism
Perfectionism says, "Everything must be flawless before I can be satisfied." Excellence says, "I will prepare carefully and give my best to God." Excellence allows room for learning, mistakes, correction, development and improvement.
A new pillar may not know everything, and that is acceptable. What matters is whether the person is teachable, diligent and willing to improve.
Biblical Examples
1 Peter 4:10-11 — Stewards of Grace
Peter says believers should use their gifts to serve one another as good stewards of God's grace. Your gift is not merely for personal expression; it is for service. This changes the question from "What gift do I have?" to "Who is my gift supposed to serve?"
A worshipper serves people by helping them encounter God. A teacher serves people by helping them understand truth. A hospitality worker serves people by helping them feel received. An administrator serves the mission by creating order. A media worker serves the message by communicating it effectively. Every legitimate function contributes to the house.
CrossCamp Application
The Excellence Test
Before completing an assignment, ask: Did I understand it? If not, ask questions. Did I prepare for it? Preparation reduces unnecessary problems. Did I communicate properly? People cannot work effectively with unclear information. Did I complete it? An unfinished assignment transfers pressure to someone else. Did I review it? Maturity includes checking your work. Did I give God my best? That is the ultimate question.
Excellence and Servant Leadership
Excellence must never become pride. A person can become so focused on doing things perfectly that they begin looking down on others. That is not Christlike excellence. Jesus demonstrated both greatness and servanthood.
CrossCamp's Standard
As pillars we aim to become reliable, so people know they can depend on us; prepared, so we do not continually operate at the last minute; teachable, so we welcome correction; diligent, so we finish what we start; humble, so we serve without entitlement; excellent, so we continually seek to improve; and Christ-centred, so our service points people toward Jesus.
